As we close out 2016, we are in awe of the revolutionary activism and achievements of V-Day, One Billion Rising and City of Joy.

Your generous support ensures that we are able to continue to support radical and creative resistance to all forms of violence against women and girls.

Now is the time for each of us to go deeper and commit ourselves – in heart and action – to the work of ending violence in all its forms. The future of our planet and our children depends on it. We must live now on the edge of incomprehensible madness, refusing to give up and refusing to pretend. Dancing on the precipice of annihilation while passionately encouraging and welcoming the new paradigm. It means leaping and assuming you will fall, dancing in the chaotic impossible passionate possible.

Dancing on Hurt Feet: Artistic Uprising Moves Audience Through Poetry

The recent performance poetry project at the The Culture Project at The Lynn Redgrave Theater featured the innovative work of Aja Monet, Gina Loring & Jaha Zainabu. The show platformed vital voices, out from the margins and on to center stage, in a celebration of black womanhood that embraced individuality with integrity, solidarity, and humor. Produced by Eve and One Billion Rising, the evening was sold out and received an amazing response by audience members. Here are some snapshots from the evening, as photographed by Nina Robinson:

RISE at the Women’s March on Washington

womensmarch three face.pngOne Billion Rising has joined the growing coalition of individuals, organizations, and grassroots groups who will be convening for The Women’s March on Washington on 21 Jan, 2017. In D.C. and in cities across the U.S. activists will be gathering, RISING, and marching to send a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us. We will update in the new year with more details including signs and a suggested meeting location for those of you who plan to join the march in D.C.

As the Year Winds Down, We Reflect & RISE

Dear V-Supporters and Friends,

As the year winds down, we reflect on the revolutionary, evolutionary work of V-Day, One Billion Rising and City of Joy.

Your support and that of activists around the globe means everything to us – your trust, generosity and vision make our movement possible.

V-Day is as alive and dynamic as ever as our work unfolded against a backdrop of violence, inequity, and patriarchy across the globe. 2016 was another poignant chapter in the evolution of our movement, bringing hope and a way forward to the most marginalized communities. One Billion Rising activists – across 200 countries – rose up to demand an end to violence against women and girls, calling for the societal underpinnings that allow violence to thrive unchecked to be dismantled, once and for all. In 2017, One Billion Rising activists will Rise In Solidarity, giving sharper focus and visibility to the exploitation of women, and to harnessing even stronger global solidarity to demand an end to violence in all forms.

Solidarity is

COJ talkbackJust last week, City of Joy in Congo graduated its 10th class. A total of 849 graduates have gone through the program and by the end of 2017, we will have graduated 1000 women. A new feature length documentary about the City of Joy – entitled CITY OF JOY – premiered to rave reviews at the DOC NYC Film Festival in November, with upcoming screenings to be announced in the new year. V-World Farm is thriving, with abundant crops and deep community involvement.

Hundreds of college and communities are actively presenting performances of The Vagina Monologues and A Memory, Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer as part of V-Day’s College and Community Campaigns. Our new Rising Fund helped groundbreaking, frontline women-lead grassroots groups to challenge long-held traditions, engender change and keep women and girls safe.

Instead of buying gifts and unnecessarily using up resources, this giving season you can make a donation to HONOR THE EARTH & V-DAY’S RISING FUND FOR WOMEN OF STANDING ROCK in the name of a loved one. This rapid response fund will support indigenous women and women’s groups working to protect the vital resource that is water at Standing Rock and throughout Native lands. By donating to this fund you can give the gift of solidarity, while also providing much needed support to women who are working around the clock to stave off forces that are seeking to destroy their sacred land, history, traditions and very existence. We will send a gorgeous digital card notifying the recipient of your thoughtful gift, a donation in their name to a fund supporting the ongoing work of women who are leading the resistance at Standing Rock and beyond.

The “Female Fighter Series” Launches at Guernica Magazine

Screen Shot 2016-12-13 at 3.32.16 PM.png“Leaving our arms does not mean leaving behind political activity and social awareness. We can have a political life from here, one without arms.” – In Colombia, a female fighter talks about life after FARC in Difficult Forgiveness by Valeria Luiselli.

This piece is first in a new innovative series that pairs female writers with women who are fighting, or have fought, in armed resistance movements worldwide to bring to light the distinctive personalities, politics, and circumstances of participation. The Guernica series is in partnership with the Politics of Sexual Violence Initiative and V-Day. Subsequent essays will be published in 2017.

RISE With Women & Allies. RISE in Solidarity, Strike on 12 December In Your Community

US
Activists: #RiseInSolidarity
and protest the
normalization of sexual assault, racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, &
hate. Women & Allies actions are happening in cities and communities across
the country on Monday, 12 December.

Find one in
your community >

Here’s more background from the organizers at
WOMEN & ALLIES:

Vision: Protection of women’s rights
and the rights of all vulnerable groups in this country.

Mission: Mobilizing women and allies
to leverage our collective power as citizens for immediate action against any
effort to erode the rights of women and other vulnerable groups.

Strike out message: The
president-elect has demonstrated overt contempt for women and a troubling
sexual misogyny before and during his campaign. As such, we have no reason to
believe that the new president or his nominees or the Republican Congress will
stand up for women’s rights. So we must take action ourselves. By striking out
on December 12th we demonstrate our collective power as citizens and our
determination to act as a check against any effort to erode the rights of
women. In addition, we stand in solidarity with the myriad other groups the
president-elect has maligned during his shameful campaign.

Victory: On the 12th of December,
women and allies in cities across the country unify to demonstrate our
collective power. We deliver the message in a unified voice that we are ready
to stand against any government action that would serve to erode the rights of
women and other vulnerable groups.
